Close to a year ago I moved to a different department at work. This department is larger than other areas I have worked and last Christmas they had a work space decorating contest. I joined in the fun and almost immediately started scheming about crafty things that I could do for next year.
A couple of weeks ago, I started the idea that I have decided to go with, a knitted String of Lights. I’m making Nina Isaacson’s String of Lights pattern from Knit Picks’ Tidings of Joy Collection but instead of doing the bulbs in the Knit Picks Palette that came with the kit, I’m using leftovers from my sock yarn collection.
Over the weekend I wound all of my sock yarn leftovers into balls and put them in a fairly large plastic bag. Mom contributed some of her leftovers and a few bits from some balls of Knit Picks Stroll Glimmer that she purchased for Christmas Decoration projects. I’m randomly pulling a ball from the bag when I go to start a bulb and then setting it aside, I figure this is the best way to randomize the yarns. I’m keeping a tally of the yarns that I’ve added to the project on my Ravelry page.
So far I’ve knit 5 bulbs. I want to knit at least 2 a week in order to have enough to decorate my area with at work this Christmas. My plan is not to knit one continuous string (that seems like it could become unwieldy) but to break it into sections that are about 3 feet long.
